Imported GM Foods Without Labels Are Flooding Hyderabad Markets

Is your organic food really GM-free?

A Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) report released on 26 July 2018 revealed that overall, around 32% of the food product samples tested by them from Delhi, Punjab and were GM (genetically modified) positive.

Experts from Telangana said that GM processed foods, including infant foods, are illegally sold on a large scale in the supermarkets in Hyderabad.

The CSE report revealed that 46% of foods, mostly soya, corn and rape seed, imported from Canada, United States, Netherlands, Thailand and UAE, are GM positive.

While most of the GM foods that were tested did not disclose GM on their labels, few also made false claims of being GM-free.

Products tested by CSE’s Pollution Monitoring Laboratory found to be GM-positive.

Products found to be GM-positive imported from reputed countries.

Common GM foods include: BT cotton seed oil; Canola and soya oil; Imported soya, maize and corn which is present in a variety of breakfast cereals.
